Uploading and Managing Images

A virtual machine image is a file that contains a virtual disk with a bootable operating system installed on it. These images are used to create virtual machine instances within the cloud. For information about creating image files, see the OpenStack Virtual Machine Image Guide.

The cloud operator assigns roles and can limit the ability to upload and manage images. Your role determines which privileges are assigned to you. If you have the appropriate privileges, use the Dashboard to upload and manage images in the project. You can also use the CLI or the Image service to manage images. See Managing Images Using the CLI.

When using the Create Image function in the Dashboard, you have two options for providing an image source: uploading an image file or specifying a location of an image in the form of a URL. See Getting Images for a list of VM images.

To upload an image to a project:

  1. Log in to the Dashboard.
  2. Click Create Image or select the Images tab in the Project drop-down list and click Create Image.

  3. In the Create an Image dialog box, enter the following values:
    • Description—Enter a brief description of the image.
    • Image Source—Choose the image source from the drop-down list. Your choices are Image Location and Image File.
    • Image File or Image Location—Based on your Image Source selection, enter the location URL of the image in the Image Location field or browse for the image file on your file system and add it.
    • Format—Select the image format for the image.
    • Architecture—Specify the architecture. For example, i386 for a 32-bit architecture or x86_64 for a 64-bit architecture.
    • Minimum Disk (GB)—Leave this field empty.
    • Minimum RAM (MB)—Leave this field empty.
    • Copy Data—Specify this option to copy image data to the Image service.
    • Public—Make the image public to all users with access to the current project.
    • Protected—Select this check box to ensure that only users with permissions can delete the image.
  4. Click Create Image. This queues the image for upload. It might take some time before the status changes from Queued to Active.

To update an existing image:

  1. Log in to the Dashboard.
  2. On the Project drop-down list, click Images.
  3. In the Actions column of the image, click the drop-down list and select Edit Image.
  4. In the Update Image dialog box, you can perform various actions. For example:
    • Change the name of the image.
    • Change the format of the image.
    • Protect an image from being deleted.
  5. Click Update Image.

To delete an image:

Deletion of images is permanent and cannot be reversed. Only users with the appropriate permissions can delete images.

  1. Log in to the Dashboard.
  2. On the Project drop-down list, click Images.
  3. Select the image or images to delete.
  4. Click Delete Images.
  5. In the Confirm Delete Images dialog box, click Delete Images to confirm the deletion.
