Cisco Metacloud September 2015 Update

September 18, 2015

We are happy to announce the September update of Cisco Metacloud™.

Feature Updates

Ceph Enhancement

Important for Ceph Customers: QCOW2 images no longer supported on Ceph

QCOW2 image support while using Ceph as your image repository storage (Glance) is no longer supported. New QCOW2 images will no longer be allowed to be uploaded and existing QCOW2 images will need to be converted to RAW image file format. We highly advise that customers migrate all Glance Images to RAW when using Ceph as soon as possible. QCOW2 images can be easily converted by following the steps in Converting Between Image Formats. Customers will be able to leverage existing QCOW2 images until they are able to convert those to RAW. This change will not effect running QCOW2 instances.

The instance conversion process does not require tearing down any currently running instances.  Instances currently running are leveraging RAW backing files due to conversion at boot time. Instances currently leveraging QCOW2 images can continue running even when the QCOW2 images are deleted. The instance conversion process only requires the replacing for QCOW2 images with RAW images in Glance. All new instances will leverage the new RAW images.

Why did we do this? Due to various performance, corruption and stability issues around how Ceph based storage handles QCOW images we felt it was in the best interest of our Customers to no longer support this configuration.  Previously, behind the scenes on boot of a QCOW2 instance we  would convert QCOW2 image to RAW.  This would prevent some of the performance and stability issues but caused significant performance problems and delays in the boot times of the instances.  It also resulted in some customer confusion on the actual type of instance backing files being used by their instances.  The supported Image format types are described at the bottom of these release notes and can also be found in Converting Between Image Formats. Please subscribe to these pages to be notified if the supported image types change.

Cisco Metacloud

Metacloud offers a consistent and self-contained bundle for the rapid deployment of Cisco Metacloud Private Cloud resources. The foundational component provides the Core Controller services for cloud orchestration. Compute and storage capacity can then be added either through additional Metacloud components or by leveraging existing hardware resources.

Customers that purchase Cisco Metacloud can now consume the OpenStack Networking (Neutron) service. Neutron is enabled by leveraging two Cisco ASR 1000s and the Cisco ASR 1000 Neutron plug-in. This allows Metacloud to provide the most scaleable and reliable implementation of Neutron on the market today.     The Neutron service provides a rich set of Software Defined Networking features that are documented in our Networking feature matrix.   Currently Cisco Metacloud is for new deployments only. Our Metacloud engineering team is working on the upgrade path to Neutron for current deployments.

Bug Fixes

  • The “Metrics” page in the Dashboard would display the wrong number of sockets for certain hosts
  • Self service users can now leverage Orchestration functions
  • Instances using non-public flavors that were deleted/edited should now display correctly in the Dashboard
