Using the Instance Console

You can access an active instance using the virtual console from the Dashboard. Your console options are VNC (Virtual Network Computer) or SPICE (Simple Protocol for Independent Computing Environments). You can view the console output of an instance, regardless of whether or not the console log has output. This allows relaying keyboard and mouse activity to and from an instance.

Although SPICE is the default protocol for instance consoles in the Dashboard, Metacloud provides the ability to switch between protocols.

To access an instance console through the Dashboard:

  1. Log in to the Dashboard.
  2. From the Project drop-down list, click Instances.
  3. Click on an active instance in the Instances list.
  4. Click the Console tab.

Console Security Considerations

Metacloud reference images allow root logins on the console without a password. While this may seem strange, having a password here provides no real security benefit for images in a default state, since the password would need to be made broadly available. As a recommended best practice, instance administrators should either lock the root account (passwd -l root) or set a complex password as part of their provisioning process.
